A fire has occurred at a high rise building on Parliament Street in Toronto. Approximately 1500 residents are unable to return to their homes. Safety for the residents is the top priority, and they cannot return home until it is completely safe. This may mean a prolonged period away from their homes and their possessions.
The Red Cross is working in municipalities in Canada to coordinate emergency relief efforts and get help to the people in the affected areas as quickly as possible. Money raised will enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from this event and similar events in Toronto.

"When man finally learns to control the elements... When the winds will be quiet and the earth cannot be torn apart...When there will be no loneliness... no destitution... no war... When the last hungry man, woman or child is fed... Only then will there be no need for the Red Cross."
Albert Schweitzer - Nobel Peace Prize winner
The funds will be designated for the purpose for which they were given. In the unlikely event that we raise more money than can be reasonably and effectively spent, we will strive to use any residual funds for similar purposes and/or in a similar geography and to respond to other disasters and humanitarian needs throughout Canada.
The fundraising cost related to any emergency appeal will not exceed five percent. Remaining funds will be used for Red Cross operations to support vulnerable people, families and communities.
